This document is a brief report of the trees that will be affected by the current road widening project in Naga City. The data presented is part of the partial tree inventory/census along the main roads in Naga City. The data described in this paper came from the data generated by fieldwork activities conducted from December 05, 2017 to May 23, 2019 and included portions of the 17 barangays in Naga City.

The past fieldwork activities for this Citizen Science project were participated by volunteers from They Grey We Green, SULOG (Sumaro sa Salog), private individuals, environmental management students, citizen scientists, and headed by the Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research of the Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU-INECAR).

Tree census was facilitated using a Kobo Collect android application developed in part by the INECAR team. Using the application, the volunteers geotag the trees and input important information from each of the trees, like the species or local name and the barangay where it is located. In addition, the volunteers also took pictures of the trees to aid in the validation of species. After fieldwork, the volunteers sent their files online, to a cloud server that can be accessed through a web application, the KoboToolbox.

For this report, data from the server was exported and downloaded for very basic data cleaning and processing using R and RStudio. Please note that the data presented only refers to the trees in Barangays Liboton, San Felipe, and Pacol that will be affected by the current road widening project in Naga City. Please understand that this is a beta version of a future more comprehensive visualization of Trees in the City, as the author is still not done cleaning and cross checking the current 2082 tree entries. Furthermore, this document was also created using the said software.

Map of Plotted Trees in the Three Barangays:

The author would like to thank all of the volunteers and citizen scientists who helped in the data gathering and the sponsors who have extended assistance to the researchers. The work in this project is still not done as we take on the task to continue to maintain and protect the Trees in Naga. The Writ of Continuing Mandamus ordered by the Court strengthens our call for sustainable development and resilient future, most importantly, in this time of Climate Emergency.

Volunteer as a citizen scientist!
